“The manifesto is this: Do the work you want to see done.” ~Austin Kleon~

Inspired by Austin Kleon, and determined to give value back to my favorite Youtube Creator “Seen Through Glass,” I set out to refresh his logo, something that I always felt was askew. Specifically, the lack of attention to detail in the logo did not match the level of quality of production I associate with STG’s videos.

Breakdown

Misalignment: Nearly all of the spacing and angles were inconsistent, so I simplified everything to use 2 angles and made the spacing even between the 3 letters.

Originally in my plans to eliminate, I ultimately decided to fine-tune the negative space in the “S” as it is essential for the logos legibility.

Strong. Recognizeable. Polished.

For the subtext, I chose a serif font, reminiscent of “American typewriter” to represent the journalistic qualities of the channel, without feeling so cliché.

Brand, not just a logo

Taking cues from the channel’s common themes, I constructed small icons to be used for a pattern.

  • Chequered racing flag

  • Classic car wheel

  • Car keys

  • Racing helmet

  • Spectacles

  • Vintage steering wheel

  • Coffee Cup

Using my updated logo, I created a new intro clip for Seen Through Glass videos.

It was modeled after the startup sequence for the Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale, Sam’s recently acquired dream car.

A final example, using the same paint-to-sample Racing Green Metallic, as found on Sam’s GT3.

“Maybe your hero will see your work, maybe he or she won’t. Maybe they’ll respond to you, maybe not. The important thing is you show your appreciation without expecting anything in return, and that you get new work out of the appreciation.”
